Department of Religious Studies mourns passing of graduate student Mahmoud Samak

Thursday, May 16, 2019

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Mahmoud Samak. Mahmoud was a second-year M.A. student in Religious Studies from Cairo, Egypt.  His primary scholarly interest was the comparative social and religious analysis of contemporary Judaism and Islam.  Mahmoud was a kind and generous colleague and a dedicated student. In recognition of his commitment to his studies, the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Kansas has posthumously awarded Mahmoud the M.A. degree.

The Department of Religious Studies will hold a public memorial event for Mahmoud Samak on Monday, May 20th in the Big 12 Room of the Kansas Memorial Union, from 3:00 to 5:00pm.
